Wooden it be Nice!

Have you been enjoying all the wonderful projects being shared by the team this month?  There is so many wonderful wood items to choose from to get your creative juices flowing from Wooden Letters and Words to Flowers and Leaves to Photo Frames and Home Décor Pieces such as houses and hearts.

One way you may not have thought to use wood is as journal covers.  This is exactly what we used at the recent retreat I co-hosted with my friend Julie who owns my local art studio/store Time to Create.  With our seaside location in mind we thought we would capture the feel of drift wood with some light weight ply.  My co-hosts husband cut the wood to size for us and drilled the holes for binding and we then proceeded to add a few light coats of paint and scratched this up a little with the ends of a paint brush.

Each participant was also given a mermaid medallion for their covers and could add to them as they desired with further stamping and paint.  Here's a look at a few in progress.

Wood is the perfect surface to work on with paper, paint, and stamping.

Throughout the week we tried various other art techniques, did an assortment of enquiries all of which meant we had lots of pages to add to our journals.

The plan was that once we had all our pages in order we would use cable ties to bind and hold our journal together.  These could then be adorned with ribbon's and charms.  One of our participants - Chris,  used hers as a special memento of our time away and even added her photos of our time away like a scrapbook.

So the question to ask when you start a project is Would Wood Be Nice to use?  My thoughts are Yes!

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
