Altered Spring Folder

Howdy! Spring in Texas is different from year to year. It always depends on the winter rains. If it rains we have a glorious display of wildflowers thanks to the late Lady Bird Johnson--it was part of her mission in life to beautify this great state's highways and fields with glorious blooms--they are sacred here. If the rains don't come then there are a few hardy perenials that will pop up despite the drought but some of the truly spectacular blooms never show their face.

THIS winter we had an unusual amount of rain. The result: MOUNDS of beautiful flora...AND an amazing amount of butterflies. I have been active overtime taking photos documenting this season--as I do every spring--and this folder will be the best place to display some of these gorgeous photographs. I hope you enjoy--and can bear to see flowers ans butterflies from me ONE more time!

To create this project, open your file folder and fold it up from the bottom about 4". Fold the right and left sides into the center and crease to make 4 panels. With the Paris Trunk Ink I stipple-brushed color, concentrating on the edges of both sides of the folder. For a "background" for my collage, I tore up map and diagram images on background collage sheets and steampunk collage sheets. I tore a loose square around the flowers. On the back side of folder the flowers were collaged on top of the map background. On the front, the flowers were left only for the pockets. Birds and butterflies were cut "close" and collaged over the entire folder. A card was printed for the front to indicate the season. My photos were printed on matte card stock and distressed to give a worn feeling. A final ink around the edges finished off the folder.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages. I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent! Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar. Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them. Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA! You have made your own solvent for literally pennies. You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a HUGE jar on the window sill! Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
